India Today Group Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Arun Puri on Friday said the world is witnessing a paradoxical moment in which rapid technological breakthroughs are emerging alongside increasing geopolitical instability. He made the remarks while inaugurating the 23rd edition of India Today Conclave 2026 in New Delhi. Speaking on the conclave’s theme, Breakthroughs and Breakdowns, Puri said artificial intelligence represents one of the most extraordinary technological revolutions in human history, even as war and weak global institutions threaten the international order. He said AI is reshaping productivity, governance and creativity, giving India an opportunity to convert innovation into growth. However, he cautioned that technologies such as deepfakes and polarizing algorithms could also destabilize society if not guided by ethics and responsible leadership. Puri also mentioned challenges including climate change, lack of trust in institutions and changes in geopolitics, and stressed the need for open debate and independent thinking to ensure that successes translate into sustainable progress.
