In a public show of support, US President Joe Biden hugged his son Hunter in front of cameras after the latter was shot. Pleaded guilty to federal gun charges.

The 81-year-old president traveled to Wilmington, Delaware, midweek, and was greeted at the Delaware Air National Guard plane terminal by Hunter Biden, his wife Melissa Cohen and their 4-year-old son, Beau.

Biden hugged Hunter and spoke to him for several minutes and was also seen offering affection and comfort to his grandson.

In the historic first criminal prosecution of a child of a sitting U.S. president, Hunter Biden was convicted Tuesday of all three felony charges related to the 2018 purchase of a revolver when, prosecutors argued, the president’s son lied on a mandatory gun-purchase form that he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs.

President Biden, who remained away from the courtroom during the trial, said in a statement shortly after the verdict that he would accept the outcome and “continue to respect the judicial process as we consider Hunter’s appeal.”

Hunter Biden could face up to 25 years in prison, but he is not expected to receive the maximum sentence because he is a first-time offender, and there is no guarantee the judge will send him to prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.

Defense attorney Abbe Lowell said they would “continue to vigorously pursue all legal challenges available.” In a written statement, Hunter Biden said he was disappointed by the outcome but grateful for the support of family and friends.

Just weeks after Hunter Biden was convicted, the former president Donald Trump found guilty on 34 felony charges The case concerned the payment of money to a porn actor to keep quiet during the 2016 campaign. The two cases are different, as Hunter Biden is a private citizen and is not contesting an election. However, both have argued that they were victims of the politics of the time.

However, Trump has continued to falsely claim that the verdict was “rigged,” while President Biden has said he will accept the verdict involving his son and will not pardon him.

In his statement on Tuesday, Joe Biden said he and the First Lady are proud of their son, who he says has been sober since 2019, and will always be there for him with their “love and support.”
