SpaceX and Starlink CEO Elon Musk recently shared an X (east known as Twitter) post which contained an interesting video. “The distance between the US and Russia is less than you thought – under the title Diamed Islands”, reveals a surprising geographical fact about the two countries.
“Not all Americans know that America and Russia are very close to one -just two miles separate. And even more, they are sometimes connected,” video note.

While Russia and the United States may look far away on the global map, their nearest point is just 2.4 miles (about 3.8 kilometers). The distance is found between the two islands in the Bering Strait, known as the Diomed Islands located in the Arctic Ocean. Island – Little Diamade, which belongs to the United States, and Big Diamade, which is part of Russia – separates from narrow strait. Despite their closeness, both islands are located on the opposite edges of the international date line, making them a unique geographical feature.
As Russian news agency Tass, The islands have two famous Russian sailors, Ivan Crusanstetern and Makar Ratnavon, who led the first periphery campaign of Russia from 1803 to 1806.
The Russian Explorer Semayon Dedanev became the first recorded visitors for these islands in 1648, when they discovered Eurasia and the strategy separating North America. Later in the name of Vitus Bering, which departed through it in 1728, Strait now becomes part of the 30-mile long Russian-American border-a demarcation installed after the Russian Empire, sold Alaska in the US in 1867, in 1867.
After sharing on her X handle, Elon Musk received a large -scale traction to the attractive video, which has been viewed more than 77 million times to date. More than 11000 people have left their comments on it, and have liked it close to 4 lakhs.
Some users commented on Elon Musk’s tweet with stunning reactions, suggesting that the US and Russia should consider an associate, as they have common with each other with the European Union.
One user expressed surprise, given, “It is wild. America and Russia are neighbors and must be a natural ally.”
Another thanked Musk for sharing the video, “Very interesting; I never knew. Thanks, for alone, reposting.”
