Vodafone Idea (VI) has started rolling its 5G services in Delhi NCR from May 15. This expansion is part of the VI’s 5G rollout across the country. Earlier, Telco had announced the launch of its 5G services in cities including Mumbai, Patna and Chandigarh. VI is planning to bring 17 telecom circles from 5G where it has acquired the spectrum by August 2025.
For the rollout of 5G services in the Delhi NCR region, VI has participated with Ericsson to handle the infrastructure deployment. The network is based on a 5G non-standalone architecture, depending on the existing 4G infrastructure to distribute 5G services similar to Airtel. Jio, on the other hand, has established its 5G infrastructure based on a standalone 5G NR architecture, which means it has created a new infrastructure without relying on the existing 4G network.
On the other hand, the non-standard infrastructure of VI will allow telecommunications to initiate an easy transition between 4G and 5G networks. The company is also introducing an AI-based self-organizing network (Son) technology to manage and improve network performance.
Vi 5G plans
As an introductory offer, VI is providing unlimited 5G data to users with compatible equipment on schemes starting from Rs 299. These schemes will support 5G speed on data-intensive mobile loads like video streaming, mobile gaming, video calls and large downloads. The plan of Rs 299 provides unlimited calls, 1 GB daily data limit, 100 SMS per day and comes with a validity of 28 days.
Meanwhile, in Mumbai, where VI’s 5G service is available since March, the company offers eight prepaid and four postpaid unlimited 5G plans, and similar schemes are expected for Delhi NCR.
In Mumbai, VI claims that 70 percent of users with 5G-competent devices are already using their 5G services, and about 20 percent of the total data traffic is currently controlled by its 5G network. The company has not yet disclosed data for Delhi NCR.
The VI note that its 5G expansion is part of the capital expenditure scheme of Rs 55,000 crore spread over three years. The company says it aims to upgrade network capacity and coverage in major cities and other areas where demand is increasing. Rollouts in Delhi NCR are scheduled for this year, which is expected to follow Bangalore and Mysore soon.
