In his speech before performing yoga, Mr Jaishankar said that yoga is an Indian tradition, but now it has really become a universal practice. He said International Yoga Day has served as an inspiration, a magnet, a way to bring people together, spread the practice, really make the planet happier, healthier and more connected.
Jaishankar said, “I am very happy to be joining so many of you in Abu Dhabi today. I am here today and I have heard about this programme and I agree with you that yoga is an Indian tradition, but I think now it has really become a universal practice.”
He said, “We are so pleased to see over the last 10 years how International Yoga Day has served as a way to inspire, mobilise, bring people together, spread the practice and really make the planet happier, healthier and more connected. So, it is a great pleasure for me to join all of you this evening.”
This year, June 21 marks the 10th anniversary of International Yoga Day. In December 2014, the United Nations unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by India to celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21, which is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
Mr Jaishankar, who is on an official visit to the UAE, visited the BAPS Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. He said the temple is a true cultural bridge between India and the UAE.
Following his visit to the temple, Mr Jaishankar wrote in a post on Instagram, “Blessed to visit the BAPS Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi today. A visible symbol of India-UAE friendship, it sends a positive message to the world and is a true cultural bridge between our two countries.”
“The visit will provide an opportunity to review the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the UAE and the entire landscape of regional and global developments,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
