Director Bharat Shrinet’s ‘Udaipur files’ were released in theaters across India on Friday, August 8 after undergoing many controversies and legal obstacles.

The film is based on the case of Kanhiyalal murder in 2022, which shook the entire country. Initially, when the teaser of the film came out, Kanhiyalal’s family objected and filed a petition in the Rajasthan High Court, which led to a temporary migration on the film. He said that the film was giving him mental anguish and it could spoil social harmony. But in July 2025, the Supreme Court raised the migration, saying that making a film on a true incident is not illegal, unless it violates constitutional boundaries.

The film was released today after receiving clearance from the censor board. On the first day, the film received a positive response from the audience. Film-goers said that the film was a mirror of truth that every Indian should see. The audience said that he felt pain, which was not just a murder, but the result of society’s silence. He admitted that ‘Udaipur files’ made him a witness to the truth. The audience shared that he saw Kanhiyalal’s death not only as news but as a human suffering.

Film-goers also reflected on the role of hatred, religious fanaticism and social media, which is shown in detail in the film. Viewers believe that this film is not just a story, but a warning that if the society remains silent, the next victim can be someone else.

The title ‘Udaipur Files’, which was earlier titled ‘Gyanvapi Files: A Taylor’s Murder Story’, was earlier scheduled to release on July 11, 2025. However, after going through a long legal battle, the Supreme Court directed the film’s release on 8 August.
