Glen Powell’s ‘Twisters’ is full of thrills but lacks emotional depth. The film will be released in theatres on July 19.

Release date: July 19, 2024
Disaster films are known for being edge-of-your-seat thrillers and pacing. ‘Twisters’ is a standalone sequel to the 1996 film ‘Twister’ starring Glen Powell. The film is everything you would expect from the genre. But is it better than the 1996 film? Let’s find out.
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, ‘Twisters’ revolves around Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a meteorologist who quits chasing tornadoes to test tracking systems after losing her friends in storms. However, she is brought back to the open fields by her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a new tracking system. During this time, she meets Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), a flamboyant YouTuber who chases tornadoes for passion and fun. As the storm intensifies, Kate and Tyler join hands to save lives in central Oklahoma.
The fact that this film revolves around a disaster makes it a harrowing experience to watch. But director Lee focuses more on the thrilling aspects of chasing tornadoes than the disaster itself. When you see Kate or Tyler calling tornadoes ‘beautiful’ (ironic), you almost wonder what excites these people. In one scene, Tyler says that as a child, when he first saw a tornado, he was amazed while his worried mother looked at him in shock. This explains his line: ‘If you feel it, chase it!’
Kate’s charisma and passion to do good for people are noble. However, the film, which relies on “feel it, chase it” dialogue, lacks emotional dialogue.

It is primarily about thrills. Don’t get me wrong, it is made on a grand scale and does justice to the genre. But unlike the previous film, which had thrills and emotional quotients together, ‘Twisters’ lacks a strong emotional anchor.
The chemistry between Glenn and Daisy is fun to watch. Both Glenn and Daisy give a subtle performance that is interesting to watch. They are so comfortable on screen that it is impossible to imagine where the two will eventually land.
The film is far from being realistic. Some parts make you question logic, but even then, the film does not guarantee realism. The soundtrack is fun. The countryside track works for most parts.
The scenes are both stunning and terrifying. If you want to see a large-scale thriller, know that ‘Twisters’ is currently playing in theaters.
