The theatrical run of ‘Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri’ starring Kartik Aryan and Ananya Panday in lead roles is almost over. The romantic comedy drama directed by Sameer Vidwans collected Rs. Earned Rs. 49 crores at the worldwide box office. This yielded Rs. 39 crore (Rs 32.50 crore net) from domestic markets, while Rs. ₹10 crore (USD 1.1 million) came from international territories.
Kartik Aryan’s film turned out to be a major disaster at the box office, earning around Rs. Makers suffered a loss of Rs 100 crore! It failed to generate enthusiasm among the audience at first, and then average word-of-mouth sealed its fate on the opening day itself. Had the film received a positive response, it would have performed even better.
A major reason for Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri not making a splash at the box office could also be its style. The rom-com genre in general is struggling to find an audience in the post-pandemic times. The highest-grossing film in this genre is Ranbir Kapoor’s Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar, which also did not perform well.
Also, these days there is a bit of ignorance among the audience towards films which do not have much anticipation or any X factor. There is a perception among the audience that these are OTT films. The 8-week OTT window is a big reason why audiences don’t bother going to theaters to watch these types of movies. Having said that, the industry needs to extend the digital window by about 6 months, if not more, to save the fading business of such genre-specific and medium-sized films with no anticipation.
