Trump to undergo virtual interview before sentencing in hush-money case
The general purpose of a pre-sentence probation interview is to prepare a report that can tell the judge more about the defendant, and help determine the appropriate sentence for the crime.

Former President Donald Trump is to be interviewed by New York probation officials on Monday, a necessary step before his sentencing in July in his criminal hush money case, according to three people familiar with the planning.
Trump will give the interview via computer video conference from his residence at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, the people told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly disclose plans.
One of Trump’s lawyers, Todd Blanch, will be present for the interview. People convicted of crimes in New York typically meet with probation officers without their lawyers, but the judge in Trump’s case, Juan Merchan, said in a letter Friday that he would allow Blanch’s presence.
The general purpose of a pre-sentence probation interview is to prepare a report that can tell the judge more about the defendant, and help determine the appropriate sentence for the crime.
Such reports are usually prepared by a probation officer, social worker, or psychologist employed by the probation department, who interview the defendant and possibly the person’s family and friends, as well as people affected by the crime.
The presentence report includes the defendant’s personal history, criminal record, and recommendations for sentencing. It will also include information about employment and any obligations to help care for a family member. It is also a chance for the defendant to say why they think they should receive a lighter sentence.
The jury convicted Trump of falsifying his company’s business records, part of a broader scheme to buy the silence of people who told embarrassing stories about him during the 2016 presidential campaign. One payment of $130,000 was made to Stormy Daniels, a porn actor who claimed she had a sexual relationship with Trump, which he denied.
Trump, the Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee, says he is innocent of any crime and that the criminal case is aimed at harming his chances of returning to the White House.
Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement Sunday that allies of President Joe Biden’s Democratic Party “continue their ongoing witch-hunt, abusing and misusing the power of their offices to interfere in the presidential election.”
“President Trump and his legal team are already taking the necessary steps to challenge and defeat the lawless Manhattan DA’s case,” he said.
Marchen has scheduled Trump’s sentencing for July 11. He has discretion to impose a range of sentences, ranging from probation and community service to up to four years in prison.
