
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to restore the name of North America’s highest peak Mount McKinley from ‘Denali’ – a move taken by former US President Barack Obama during his tenure. According to the order, the name of the national park around the mountain will remain ‘Denali National Park and Preserve’.
Mr. Trump said during his inaugural address, “We will restore the name of a great President, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley where it should be and where it belongs.”
Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska led the effort to make the change official.
“This order honors President McKinley for giving his life for our great nation and dutifully recognizes his historic legacy of defending America’s interests and creating enormous wealth for all Americans. Date of this order Within 30 days of this, the Secretary of the Interior must restore the name “Mount McKinley.” The Secretary will subsequently update the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) to reflect the naming and restoration of Mount McKinley,” the official said. The 25th US President William McKinley never visited the mountain and has no significant historical connection to either the peak or the state of Alaska, although it was named in his honor in 1917. The name was officially changed to ‘Denali’ by Mr Obama. 2015, adopting the name used for centuries by Alaska Natives.
This mountain is more than 20,000 feet high.
Attacking Mr Trump’s decision, Ethan Manuel, director of the Sierra Club’s land conservation program, said it went “against the wishes and centuries of tradition of Alaska Natives”.
“The Koyukon people have known this mountain as ‘Denali’ for centuries, and even state elected officials oppose this effort to rename it. It is clear that Donald Trump cares about the concerns of the American people. The culture wars are more interested in stunting than addressing.” He said.
Donald Trump changes the name of the Gulf of Mexico
Mr Trump, who was sworn in on Monday, announced his plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico ‘America’s Gulf’ from his inaugural platform.
“The Gulf will continue to play a vital role in shaping America’s future and the global economy, and in recognition of this rich economic resource and its vital importance to our nation’s economy and its people, I am directing that it be officially Let the name of the Gulf be given.” America,” read the executive order of the US President-elect.
Outlining his priorities, Mr Trump also stressed the national emergency at the US-Mexico border, vowing to crack down on illegal immigration and deporting millions of people he described as “criminal aliens”.
