President-elect Donald Trump is appointing immigration expert Stephen Trump as his deputy chief of staff. While Trump has not officially announced, Vice President-elect J.D. Vance confirmed it in a post on Instagram congratulating him on the appointment.
“This is another great selection from the president,” he said.
Miller was a policy adviser and speechwriter for Trump in his first term and resumed the function during his campaign, often traveling with Trump to his rallies.
Trump announced last week that he was appointing Susan Wills, one of his main campaign managers, as his chief of staff.
On Sunday night, he said he was appointing Tom Homan as “border czar” to oversee deportations and tighten border security.
Miller and Homan are expected to work together on cracking down on illegal immigrants, which Trump made a centerpiece of his campaign.
His appointment being the first is also a measure of how much importance Trump attaches to immigration.
In media interviews, Miller has said that illegal immigrants should be detained and held in camps until they are deported.
“Trump would unleash the vast arsenal of federal powers to enact the most spectacular immigration crackdown,” he warned in an interview with The New York Times last year.
“The deportations will begin on Inauguration Day as soon as he takes the oath of office,” he told Fox News last week.
One of Miller’s controversial proposals is to end birthright citizenship – granting citizenship to anyone born in the US regardless of their parents’ status – which Trump has raised.
His position does not require confirmation by the Senate.
Before joining Trump’s 2016 campaign, Miller worked for conservative Republican Congresswomen Michele Bachmann and Jeff Sessions when he was attorney general.
On Monday morning, Trump said he was nominating Congresswoman Elise Stefanik as permanent representative to the United Nations, the second Cabinet post he has announced after Wills, who holds that rank.
