TR Knight is opening about what was really to film one of the most uncomfortable moments of Gray’s Anatomy. The actor recently shared his character of the notorious sex scene between his character George O’Mali, and Mereye Pompeo of Ellen Pompeo. Talking with people, Knight admitted that filming the scene was a deep shameful and emotional experience for both of them.
“We both really got scared what was going to happen,” Knight said. “This is so, what our characters are doing here? What they are doing? You can’t help but it seems that it is not going well.” After the division of Meredith from Derek Shepherd and a hard conversation with her father, the scene took place in season two of the show. George used an emotional moment to express his feelings for himself, causing a strange night that ended in tears and regrets.
“You can’t really get more derogatory experience for both characters,” Knight shared. He also confirmed that he had to shoot the scene twice as the first included “very strong”, some Pompeo recently mentioned in a podcast interview.
While Pompeo admitted to cry during filming, Night said, “I don’t remember I have to cry. (Ellen’s) Smriti is, I am sure, better than me.”
He remembered that repeating the scene made the experience worse. “I remember this is an abusive (view), and then we had to go back again to tape it again. And then he was like relieving it again again.”
Knight also talked about how deep the actors care about the choice of their characters. “You see them going down on the dark road on the dark road and going down in a car, and you are worried for them,” he said. Despite the inconvenience, Knight praised the authors. “Let’s face it, we all make heavy mistakes in life,” he said. “And we are not always in our best. I think it’s something that is a real, beautiful skill of Shonda.”
He ended by saying, “They are going for this terrible, terrible sex that is going to bother him for the rest of his life. Well, George’s short life, unfortunately.”
