‘Took a little liberty’: Michelle Yeoh opens up on her Madame Horrible character in Wicked movie

Wicked is already capturing the hearts of many fantasy movie lovers. Recently, the actress who plays Madame Morrible in the much-awaited film opened up about her role and the improvements added to it.

She shared her thoughts during the Los Angeles premiere of “Wicked” while standing with Broadway star Sheryl Lee Ralph, who played the same character in the stage musical.

“We took a little liberty with Madame Morrible for the movie,” the Everything, Everywhere All at Once actress told Lee Ralph in front of Deadline.

Yeoh then asked the Broadway star before the screening to tell her what she would think of Madame Morrible, played by the Memoirs of a Geisha actress.

Responding to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actress Sheryl Lee Ralph said that when playing a character on stage, “On Broadway, they don’t take any liberties with the script.”

He said that nothing has changed, only what the audience imagines has changed.

Talking about the character of Madame Morrible, the Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit actress said that she is someone who notices talent and said, “I have waited for many years to come across a gift like you. Have waited till…”

Yeoh then discussed the major differences between playing the character on screen and stage, saying that “the amazing DP on Wicked, Alice Brooks, captures all the nuances.”

The Shang-Chi actress praised director Jon M. Chu for his ability to convey the deep emotions and feelings of the characters in the film. He stressed that he had successfully portrayed the emotions of both the lead characters. When Glinda and Elphaba sing in the film, the audience gets a clear insight into their thoughts and feelings.

Wicked is a musical fantasy starring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba.

Meanwhile, in addition to Yeoh, the We Can’t Be Friends songstress, and Elphaba, the film also stars Jeff Goldblum, Peter Dinklage, Jonathan Bailey, and more.

Wicked will release on November 22, 2024.
