  • The board suggested the manufacturers to change the title of ‘Janaki vs State of Kerala’.
  • The filmmaker said that the name will be very difficult

Director Praveen Narayanan has defended the title of ‘Janaki vs. State of Kerala’, suggesting that it is impractical to change it at this stage. The release of the Malayalam film starring Minister Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran has been delayed in changing his title after demanding the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). CBFC cited religious concerns, given that ‘Janaki’ refers to the Hindu goddess Sita, and her objection to using the name for sexual harassment victims.

The filmmaker said, “We admit that Janaki Devi is also another name for Sita, but it is a common name used in many parts of the country. Through our film, we never tried to discredit Goddess Sita or any other belief system in our country.”

He further said, “CBFC could have a different approach to the character’s name. We are in the final stages of production and it is difficult for us to change the character’s name at this level.”

Film associations in Kerala have a rally against CBFC’s request, arguing that it forms unnecessary intervention in artistic expression. The Kerala High Court has also questioned the CBFC’s decision, stating that the film’s trailer was approved without issues.

The film was originally scheduled for release on 20 June, but conflict has given birth to significant delays. The creators of the film have expressed disappointment by describing CBFC’s demands as “arbitrary” and “unfair”.

The Kerala High Court has asked CBFC to provide a detailed description by 2 July. The fate of the film hangs in balance until a proposal reaches, Narayanan and his team expect a favorable result. Meanwhile, the court will watch the film on July 5 and share its views at the next hearing on 7 July.

The court investigation about why the name of the film should be changed, especially when films are common in the name of gods in Indian cinema, suspect CBFC’s stand.

The film stars Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parmeswaran in lead roles. The film community and supporters continue to advocate their release under their original title.
