Pop sensation Taylor Swift has always been a topic of discussion, be it her surprise releases, jet use or net worth. But, sometimes she also makes headlines for her appearance.
Her 2020 documentary, Miss Americana, featured a collection of derogatory comments made about her on several talk shows over the past several years. One of these comments was, “She’s too skinny. It bothers me.” As expected, this upset Swift as well.
In one part of the film, the singer talked about her struggle with an eating disorder. In a voiceover during one scene, she was heard saying that looking at pictures of herself every day was not good for her. Although she mentions that this happened a few times, she was not proud of it. She also admitted that she was motivated to stop eating when she felt like her “belly was too big” or that someone thought she looked “pregnant.”
In an interview with Variety, the pop star detailed what she went through and how difficult it was for her to talk about it in the documentary. She wasn’t sure she’d feel comfortable talking about body image and her relationship with food over the years.
She then praised her director Lana Wilson, saying, “But the way Lana (Wilson, the film’s director) tells the story, it makes sense. My relationship with food was the same psychology I applied to everything else: If I got a pat on the head, I took it as good. If I got punished, I took it as bad.”
Swift explained that when she was 18, she saw a magazine cover with the headline, “Pregnant at 18?” All because she was wearing something that exposed her lower belly. She also explained how good it felt to be praised for fitting into sample sizes without alterations for a photo shoot.
Filmmaker Lana Wilson also pointed out how most people didn’t think Swift was too skinny at the start of her career. She explained how humans can choose to ignore this about women, but are used to doing so. She then praised the singer for showing enough courage to speak honestly about it.
In the film, some then and now pictures show the transformation in her appearance during her 1989 era and her Reputation era in 2018. The singer revealed that her dieting less at that time affected her stamina on tour. However, she has come to terms with her body image and seems to be comfortable with it.
The singer recently concluded the European leg of her Eras Tour with her final concert in London. She thanked her fans on her Instagram for being a part of it and also spoke about the terrorist attack threat that forced her to cancel her concerts in Vienna. Her latest release, The Tortured Poets Department, has been at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for over 15 weeks.
