Superstar Rajinikanth and versatile actor Vijay Sethupathi shared screenspace in the 2019 film Petta. During the audio launch event of the film in 2018, Thalaivar praised his co-star, who played the antagonist in the film. Rajinikanth shared that Vijay Sethupathi is no ordinary talent, and he is glad that the latter worked with him on this project.

Thalaivar said, “I was not sure who would be right for the role of Jeetu. Karthik suggested Vijay Sethupathi and I am glad that he agreed to be a part of the project. He is no ordinary talent. I have seen his films and he is an exceptional actor. After a long time, I felt I have worked with a good actor.”

Vijay Sethupathi was on cloud nine after Rajinikanth praised his acting skills. In the past, the actor had confessed that he has always been a huge fan of Thalaivar. In one of his earlier interviews, he had also called the Jailer actor a “university of acting”.

Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the film was released during the festival of Pongal in 2019. Thalaivar played the role of Kaali in the film, while Vijay Sethupathi played the character of Jeetu. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was also a part of this ambitious project along with Trisha Krishnan and Malavika Mohanan.

Talking about Petta, the film revolves around the life of Kaali, who is appointed as a hostel warden. As the story progresses, people realize that Kaali is no ordinary warden but is much more than that.

Soon after, his past starts catching up with him, and he begins a war against his old enemy Singar Singh to settle old scores.

The film received a positive response from the audience upon its release. Reportedly, the film grossed around Rs 250 crore against a budget of Rs 160 crore, making it a blockbuster hit in 2019.
