Throwback: When Nicole Kidman revealed she was struggling with Tom Cruise divorce while winning Oscar in 2003

Behind Nicole Kidman’s amazing charm and acting prowess, the actress had days and nights when she was all alone. Behind her unbearable pain, the divorce from her ex-husband Tom Cruise was the main reason. The actress openly shared her painful experience after the divorce, despite winning an Oscar, this sadness took a heavy toll on her.

Kidman is one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood. The Australian actor has several notable films to her credit, including The Others and To Die For. Kidman, 57, is still very active and recently appeared in Netflix’s A Family Affair and Prime Video’s acclaimed drama Expats directed by Lulu Wang.

But behind the showbiz fame, the actor once struggled to deal with a heavy heart after her split from Tom Cruise. When author Dave Karger asked Kidman about her personal thoughts on her spectacular Oscar win for his book, 50 Oscar Nights, the actor said she found it difficult to maintain her life despite her thriving career. She had also gained a surprising fan base by then. “I was struggling with things in my personal life, yet my professional life was going great,” she told Karger. “That’s what happens, isn’t it?” he asked back.

Kidman won her first Oscar in 2003 for her portrayal of historical literary figure Virginia Woolf in the Stephen Daldry-directed melodrama The Hours, which also starred Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Ed Harris.

While the actress dazzled on the Oscars’ grand stage in a glamorous Jean-Paul Gaultier gown, she was hiding her deep pain from her split from Cruise after 11 years of marriage. “I’m not a big party girl,” Kidman said in the book. “So I was leaving the Vanity Fair party, and everybody was saying, ‘You have to go. You have to take your Academy Award and walk into the party,'” she added.

But she wasn’t in the mood to party, “I said, ‘That just feels like bragging,'” the Moulin Rouge star added, adding that it “doesn’t feel humble.” While her peers were surprised that no one could walk away with an award, she said, “It feels really unfair.” But they were pretty supportive of her and asked the actor to join them.

It’s worth noting that Kidman broke down in tears on stage when she received the golden statuette, but Russell Crowe tried to calm her down.

Eventually, she “walked in, walked around with it, totally overwhelmed, emotional, shaking” but the actor was far from enjoying her greatest cinematic achievement, “I did not enjoy it.” When she recalled the moment, she sounded almost apologetic, “which is so stupid” regretting that she could have enjoyed it more.
