Renowned cardiologist Dr Naresh Trehan highlighted the worrying rise in heart attacks among young Indians in the post-COVID-19 era. During a session at Agenda Aaj Tak 2024, he attributed this increase to genetic predisposition, unhealthy lifestyle habits and lack of timely health assessment.

Dr. Trehan highlighted that three key tests can serve as “health horoscopes,” giving early warnings about potential health risks.

He informed that India leads the world in cases of coronary heart disease, in which genetic and generational factors play an important role. “Indians are twice as likely to have heart disease as Caucasians,” he said.

He said the prevalence of diabetes in the Indian population is almost double compared to the global average. This combination of diabetes and heart disease creates a deadly double burden, especially for young individuals.

Dr. Trehan strongly recommends that individuals undergo a comprehensive health evaluation by the age of 30. These tests include genetic sequencing, lifestyle assessment, and regular evaluation for heart disease and diabetes.

genetic sequencing

Advances in science now allow genome sequencing to identify genetic predispositions to conditions such as heart diseases, diabetes, and even some cancers. If a family history is present, the risk for the next generation doubles, making early genetic testing important.

Phenotypic analysis

Understanding one’s body composition, lifestyle habits and stress levels, known as “phenomics”, can help identify vulnerabilities. Digital devices can now measure stress, evaluate heart health through echocardiograms and monitor overall physical well-being.

regular health checkup

Dr. Trehan advised frequent checkups for hidden conditions like valve defects or unknown heart anomalies. A comprehensive evaluation every three to six months is important for people with a family history of heart disease or diabetes.

“These tests give us a health horoscope that helps us trace a person’s path to well-being. Your health is in your hands – act before it’s too late,” Dr. Trehan said. “

He said people should make lifestyle changes and take timely intervention to reduce the risks.
