Several years ago Denzel Washington decided to change his lifestyle for the better and never looked back. The Gladiator II actor spoke to Esquire for their winter issue and opened up about his health struggles. He recalled, “I was looking at pictures of me and (wife of over 40 years) Pauletta at the Academy Awards for Macbeth and I just look fat with all this dyed hair.”
That ceremony was not only a phenomenal night for her as the most nominated person of color, but also an eye-opener for her health and lifestyle changes. Washington — who showed off her natural gray hair during the interview — told the outlet that she changed her personality after seeing how the show was perceived. “I said, ‘Those days are over, man,'” he said.

“He makes meals for me and we’re training, and I’ve gone from 190-pounds to 185,” Washington shared. In his recently released highly acclaimed film Gladiator II, he flaunted his biceps while playing the role of the manipulative, power-hungry Roman emperor Macrinus.
The actor admitted that because of his continuous efforts he feels he is getting stronger. “It is important to be strong. I’m trying my best,” he told the outlet.
The Academy Award winner has received praise for his performance in the Gladiator sequel, where he portrayed a quirky Roman Empire. The film begins a few decades after the events of the original where Maximus’ son Lucius (Paul Mescal) – who is also heir to the throne – is brought into the prestigious fighting pits as a gladiator. However, with the help of Macrinus, he tries to climb out of the hell hole and free the people of Rome.
Gladiator II is currently playing in theaters.
