In Astrajeneka ‘India S Breztri Aerosphere is designed using a new type of gas (called the next generation propalent) that does not contribute much to climate change.

The new inhaler has a "near-zero global warming capacity", which means that it does not release almost no greenhouse gases in the atmosphere when used opposite old inhalers.,

A new inhaler that treats chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and also helps reduce environmental damage for use in the UK. This inhaler is already available in India.

Astrazheneka ‘S Trixeo Aerosphere, known as Breztri Aerosphere in India and other countries, is a triple-conjunction inhaler used to manage the COPD.

It is important that the latest version of the inhaler is now created using a new type of gas (called the next generation propalent) that does not contribute much to climate change.

In particular, it has “near-zero global warming capacity (GWP)”, which means that it releases almost no greenhouse gases in the atmosphere when used opposite old inhalers, which use gases that are harmful to the environment.

This change dramatically cuts the environmental footprint of the device.

The UK’s Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) gave approval for this better version of Triands, as the tests showed that the new propalent works with the old.

The new version uses a compound called HFO-1234ze (E), which has the most pressure with the traditional propellent used in the most pressure meter-containing inhalers (PMDIS).

Rud Dobber, Executive Vice President of Astrazheneka’s bioframacuticals division, said, “We are addressing the needs of both patients and environment. Trices are just the beginning with the new proponent.”

This step aligns with increasing concerns about the role of the healthcare sector in reduced climate change and emissions. Inhalers such as PMDI are widely used worldwide. While they are important for the management of respiratory diseases, their traditional proponents contribute to the greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, PMDIs use 78% of the global inhaler usage for 3% of NHS’s carbon footprint in Britain.

Professor Omar Usman of the Imperial College London said, “Pressure meters-in-law inhalers are essential for millions of people with respiratory diseases. A change in low-GWP inhaler means that patients do not have to select between best treatment and protecting the environment.”

India, also, has access to this innovation. Astrazneca Pharma India received approval to import and marketing Breztri Aerosphere from India’s Drugs Controller General, which has been available in India since January 2025.

COPD affects over 55 million people in India and is a major cause of death. Many patients rely on inhalers for daily symptoms management. The launch of a more durable inhaler can benefit both public health and environment.

The company aims to convert all its pressure inhalers to its part in this next-gene propalent as its share by 2030 ‘ambition zero carbon’ strategy. In the UK, the updated inhaler will start rolling out in the coming months.

Better disease control leads to low hospital seizures and low stress on health care systems, eventually reduces carbon emissions from medical care.

India already has access to this inhaler, it can encourage widely adopting environmentally friendly drugs in the country.
