These 5 common foods could be the reason behind your lack of concentration

Must read

Our diet plays a vital role in our physical and mental health. There is a lot of research that establishes the gut-brain connection, which means what we eat can affect our brains. Certain foods are rich in healthy nutrients and can benefit our brain health. According to Medical News Today, some of these healthy foods include oily fish, dark chocolate, berries, nuts, seeds, whole grains, eggs, etc. While eating these foods can be good for the brain, there are certain foods and drinks that scientific research shows can impair your concentration and attention.

Here are 5 foods you should avoid as they can have a negative impact on your concentration levels:

1. Pastries, cakes and white bread

According to Great Lakes Functional Neurology, even though you may enjoy eating pastries, muffins, cakes, toasted white bread, etc., foods with a high glycemic index can have a detrimental effect on overall brain function. “This causes a spike in blood sugar (which can be good for immediate functioning), but it inevitably leads to a drop in blood sugar that can leave the brain starved for energy more than ever, and leave you feeling foggy, tired, and forgetful.”

2. Foods with high salt content

According to a study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, too much salt can cause cognitive deficits. Endothelial cells inside the brain’s blood vessels are responsible for regulating the brain’s vascular tone. Researchers found that high salt intake is associated with dysfunction of these cells. Excessive salt intake can cause inflammation in the brain, which can hinder short-term memory and concentration.

3. Soda and sugary drinks

Most people love to consume fizzy and sweet beverages, feeling refreshed after drinking a glass or two. However, excessive sugar intake can cause a rapid rise in blood sugar followed by a drop, which can make it difficult to concentrate. According to Psychology Today, consuming sugar-sweetened beverages is linked to a higher risk of metabolic dysfunction, stroke, dementia, and depression.

4. Coffee

Drinking a little coffee can make you feel more alert, but drinking too much coffee can make you feel anxious or restless. For some people, even a small amount of coffee can increase anxiety. The Mayo Clinic states, “If you are sensitive to the effects of caffeine, even a small amount can lead to unwanted effects such as restlessness and sleep problems.”

5. Energy drinks

Many people may turn to energy drinks to ward off sleep and “be more focused.” However, this effect may only be temporary and may impair your brain health and concentration in the long run. Energy drinks often contain high levels of caffeine, which can increase urine output and cause dehydration. According to Healthline, mild dehydration (1-3 percent fluid loss) can worsen energy levels, worsen mood, and lead to major decreases in memory and brain performance.
