A spokesperson said on Monday that the Department of US Health and Human Services would re -organize an independent panel of health experts to make a new recommendation on applying fluoride in drinking water.

The use of minerals, which is added to water to strengthen teeth enamel and promote dental health, has been a hot button political issue in some states for decades.

A spokesman for HHS said, “HHS is re -adding the Community Preventive Services Task Force to make a new recommendation on fluoride and a new recommendation.”

The statement quoted the Secretary of Health and Human Services as an Associated Press Report, Robert F. Kennedy Junior said at an event in Salt Lake City, Utah that he is planning to tell the disease control and prevention center to recommend fluoride in drinking water.

According to the EPA statement, the US environmental protection agency will review new scientific information on the possible health risks of fluoride in drinking water in coordination with HHS, a initial step towards deciding the standards for its inclusion, as per an EPA statement, said in the same incident.

Governor Spencer Cox became the first US state to ban the use of fluoride in public water systems after signing the law for that impact last month.

The American Dental Association opposed the Utah law and maintained support for community water fluoridation to help prevent teeth decay.

The US public healthcare recommends that the drinking water level for fluoride is below 0.7 mg per liter.

The level above 1.5 mg/L is known to increase health risks such as the recommended range, bone fracture, thyroid disease and nervous system damage.

The currently applied limit by EPA is 4.0 mg/l. In September 2024, a federal judge in California ordered the EPA to strengthen its rules, stating that the compound creates an improper potential risk for children at levels that are currently specific nations.
