The teaser for ‘The Testament of Ann Lee’, a historical musical drama starring Amanda Seyfried as Shakers founder Ann Lee, has been released. Directed by Mona Fastvold, the film is based on the story of one of America’s most intriguing 18th-century religious leaders. Premiering at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival to positive reviews, ‘The Testament of Ann Lee’ is scheduled for theatrical release on December 25, 2025.

Seyfried portrays Ann Lee, who advocated gender and social equality within her sect has already attracted critical attention And is being discussed as a contender for major awards.

The recently released teaser introduces audiences to the world of the Shakers, a religious movement known for its emphasis on communal living, joyful worship, and progressive views on equality. The film explores Ann Lee’s efforts to establish a utopian community in an era of rigid social and gender norms. Seyfried leads a cast that includes Thomasin McKenzie, Lewis Pullman, Tim Blake Nelson and Christopher Abbott.

The film’s official synopsis describes it as: “From award-winning writer-director Mona Fastvold comes the extraordinary true legend of Ann Lee, founder of the devotional sect known as the Shakers. Academy Award nominee Amanda Seyfried stars as the Shaker’s irrepressible leader, who preached gender and social equality and is revered by her followers.”

Mona Fastvold took over directing duties for the film, working from a script she developed with her partner Brady Corbett. Their previous collaboration, ‘The Brutalist’ won an Oscar and centered on the story of a Holocaust survivor.

‘The Testament of Ann Lee’ premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion. Critics praised Seyfried’s performance, and industry observers are naming her as a potential contender for the Best Actress Oscar.

The cast includes many established and emerging artists. Along with Seyfried, audiences will see performances from Thomasin McKenzie, Louise Pullman, Tim Blake Nelson, Christopher Abbott, Stacey Martin, Matthew Beard, Scott Handy, Viola Pretzon, Jamie Bogyo and David Cale.

‘The Testament of Ann Lee’ is scheduled to be released in theaters on Christmas, December 25.
