In short

  • Women with postpartum bleeding are likely to develop 1.76 times to develop heart issues
  • Blood clot risk in women increases by 2.1 times after severe postpartar bleeding
  • Risters are the highest in the first year but can last up to 15 years

A new global study has found that women who experience severe bleeding after childbirth, also known as postpartum bleeding (PPH), face a high risk of heart related problems up to 15 years after delivery.

Published in the Journal of Matter-Fetal and Newborn Medicine, research analyzed more than 9.7 million women data in countries such as UK, US, Canada, South Korea, France and Sweden. The study included data from 10 previous studies conducted between 1986 and 2018.

This indicates that women who suffer from PPH are more likely to develop heart diseases such as heart failure, stroke, blood clots and other severe heart conditions.

What was the study found

Researchers found that:

  • Women with PPH were 1.76 times more likely to face heart related issues.
  • They were 2.1 times more likely to develop blood clots (thrombombolic events).
  • These health risks were the highest in the first year after delivery, but can persist for 15 years.

The risk is even more for women who had complications such as pregnancy during pregnancy.

About all conditions

PPH is already known as one of the major causes of maternal death worldwide, accounting for about 20% of such deaths.

Each year about 14 million women suffer from PPH. Until now, it was mostly seen as a short -term Emergency. But the study conducted by the reserves of Indonesia suggests that the effects can last long and quietly increase the risk of heart problems.

The lead writer of Airlngga University, Indonesia, Dr. Mangala Paska Vardhana said: “PPH is usually considered as an emergency that ends after controlling bleeding. But our study suggests that it can have a long -term effect on a woman’s heart health. Maternal care is needed to continue even after a child’s child.”

What can be done?

Doctors and researchers suggest that women who pass through PPHs should be offered regular heart examining as part of their postpartum care.

These check-ups are not expensive and can help detect and prevent heart disease.

Another researcher of Airlngga University, Dr. Fikih Faizara UstDi said, “We need more research to understand why this happens and how we can reduce these risks.

A limit of study was how it mainly covers high-or-bee countries, so more research is required to understand how PPH affects women in low and medium-income countries, where medical care is often limited and PPH is high.
