New research suggests that having walnuts for breakfast can increase brain function throughout the day. In a groundbreaking study, researchers at the University of Reading found that consuming a generous fist of walnuts (50 grams) mixed with musli and curd led to a sharp reaction time during the day and later improved memory, compared to a calorie-match breakfast without nuts. Published in Food and Function this month, the study included 32 healthy young adults aged 18–30, who consumed both types of breakfast in different days. The participants then conducted cognitive tests, while their brain activity was monitored after more than six hours.
Professor Claire Williams, who leads research at the university, said, “This study strengthens the case for walnuts as a brain.
Researchers suggest that omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), protein, and plant compounds that include nutrients of walnuts enhance the cognitive function. Walnuts are the only walnuts that provides an excellent source of omega -3 ALA (2.7g per 30g), which has been studied for its benefits for brain health, heart health, and more. Additionally, walnuts provide only other essential nutrients of different types in one hand to provide 4 grams of plant-based protein.
While these conclusions create on previous research, this is the first study to examine the immediate effects of walnuts in young adults in the same day. Williams explains, “This study examined how a dietary performance of walnuts in a sample of a healthy young adults of 18–30 years of age can benefit. Group that consuming walnuts as part of their breakfast showed better memory and more mental flexibility when completing cognitive functions throughout the day. The results of this study suggest a promising role for walnuts in increasing cognitive performance in young adults. However, to confirm these findings, further research with larger and more diverse population requires further research.
