Stephen Colbert has announced that the late show ends after his 10 -year run as a host. The long -running late night series, which was first premiered with David Letterman in 1993, wrapped in May 2026. The CBS is officially shutting down the late show franchise after 33 years.
Colbert shared the news during a tape of the show, and later posted a clip on Instagram on 17 July. “This is not just the end of our show, but it is the end of the late show on CBS,” he told the audience. “I am not being replaced. All this is just going away.”

The 61 -year -old host said that he learned about the decision only a day before. Despite surprise, he took a moment to thank his fans and the team. “I am thankful to you, the audience, who joined us,” said Collbert. “I am grateful to sharing the stage with this band, these artists here every night. And I am extraordinaryly grateful to 200 people who work here.”
Colbert reflected on his time hosting the show since 2015, saying that he and his team worked together every day and felt both happy and responsible for sharing their work with the audience in the last 10 years.
With his signature comic, Stephen Colbert also looked forward for the remaining months. “This is a task that I am eager to do with this common gang of idiots for another 10 months. It’s going to be fun,” he said.

CBS officials George Gal, Amy Ryneback and David Staff asked why the network is ending the show despite its success. “It is a financial decision against a challenging background in a purely late night,” he said in a joint press release. “It is not related to the show’s performance, content or other matters in paramount in any way.”
The officials also expressed their praise and respect for Colbert and his team, stating that his praise for his talent made the decision even more difficult. He said that he was ready to honor Colbert and celebrate the show with millions of fans in the next 10 months.
