The day is not far when you will see Made in India chips in America: PM in New York

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a large gathering of Indian Americans in New York on the second day of his three-day visit, said India is a launching pad for all kinds of technologies and the country now wants ‘Made in India’ semiconductor chips to power devices globally.

Addressing the gathering, he said, “India is not going to stop now; India is not going to slow down now. India wants more and more devices in the world to run on Made in India chips.” He referred to India’s growing manufacturing capacity, especially in the field of electronics and semiconductors.

The Prime Minister said, “The day is not far when you will see Made in India chips even in America.”

In June 2023, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal to set up a semiconductor unit at Sanand in Gujarat.

The Prime Minister said, “Just a few months later, the foundation stone of Micron’s first semiconductor unit was also laid. So far, five such units have been approved in India. The day is not far when you will see Made in India chips even in America. This small chip will take the flight of developed India to new heights and this is Modi’s guarantee.”

The government has so far approved five semiconductor units in India, of which construction is underway at two sites and work will soon begin at the other three. They have already made a cumulative investment of about Rs 1.5 lakh crore. He also talked about India’s innovations in digital public infrastructure and how it is being adopted rapidly.

He said, “Now India does not lag behind, but creates new systems and takes the lead. India has given the world a new concept of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).”

Prime Minister Modi told the community that India’s 5G market has now become bigger than the US and this has happened in just two years.

He said, “Now India is working on ‘Made in India’ 6G. This was possible because we made policies to promote this sector. We worked on Made in India technology.”

He told the attendees how India has become a major player in mobile manufacturing, moving from being an importer to an exporter. PM Modi also spoke about India’s commitment to climate change despite being a low-emitting country.

He said, “Our conviction towards reforms is unprecedented. Our green energy transformation programme is a good example of this. Despite having 17 per cent of the world’s population, India’s contribution to global carbon emissions is only 4 per cent. We have no role in destroying the world! We could have fuelled our growth by burning carbon fuels. However, we chose green energy transformation.”

At COP26 in 2021, India committed to an ambitious five-part “Panchamrut” pledge. This included reaching 500 gigawatts of non-fossil power capacity, generating half of all energy requirements from renewable sources, and reducing emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030.
India aims to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 45 percent. Finally, India has committed to net-zero emissions by 2070. India meets a large part of its energy needs through fossil fuels, and various renewable energy sources are seen as a way to reduce dependence on conventional sources of electricity.

Later on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi will interact with CEOs of leading US companies to foster greater collaboration between the two countries in cutting-edge areas of AI, quantum computing, semiconductors and biotechnology.
