We test each phone in real-world scenarios, focusing on its features, design, performance, camera, battery life and overall value. We document our findings in a preliminary review that is updated periodically when new software updates are released, or to compare them with new phones from competitors like Apple, Samsung, Google, and OnePlus.
Photography
Photography is the main focus for most phones these days, so we take pictures and videos of different subjects in different settings and lighting scenarios. We try out any new camera mode, like the Action Mode that debuted with the iPhone 14 line or the Unblur Photo tool launched with the Google Pixel 7 series.
Battery life
Battery testing is conducted in various ways. We evaluate how long the phone lasts during a typical day of use and note how it performs during video calls, media streaming and more focused sessions of gaming. We also do a video playback test, which isn’t always included in the initial review but is sometimes added in a later update, as a simple, replicable measure of pure battery life.
Performance measurement
We use benchmarking apps to measure each phone’s performance, along with our own unique experiences using the phones for our review. Note how the graphics and animations look. Are they easy? Or do they lag or stutter? We also see how quickly the phone switches between landscape and vertical orientation and how quickly the camera app opens and is ready to take a photo.
We perform processor-intensive tasks such as editing photos, exporting videos and playing games. We evaluate whether a new version of a particular phone includes enough features to make it worth upgrading from older models.
