Trigger warning: This article contains spoilers.

The new Star Wars series The Acolyte introduces several new characters. The most interesting of the series’ main characters are Osha and May, played by Amandla Stenberg. The two are portrayed as tragically separated twins whose mysterious past makes them the main characters of the series. Although they appear together in few scenes other than flashbacks, their relationship raises many questions in the minds of the audience and fascinates us.

Children of the Force

The mysterious circumstances surrounding May and Osha’s births are an important theme in The Acolyte. Episode 3 hints at their unusual origins, but it is the series finale that confirms they were created by the Force.

Mother Aeneas (Jodie Turner-Smith) used the Force to impregnate them via a voir dire on Brendok, giving them an origin story similar to that of Anakin Skywalker. This unconventional birth method resulted in the twins having a remarkably high M-count, which connects them directly to the Force.

However, as far as Anakin being chosen goes, this doesn’t pose any threat to May and Osha against him. Rather, it adds another element to what the Force can do.

Mother Aeneas had to intervene magically for May and Osha to be born; making them rare examples of children born by Force powers. This factor alone sets them apart from all other characters seen so far in the Star Wars Universe and adds mystery to their existence.

In addition to these miraculous births, May and Osha also share a special bond. Their relationship is an example of the one between Rey and Kylo Ren during Episodes VII-IX, known as the Force Dyad, the latter of which Baldo V says is a unique connection that allows both parties to communicate over long distances and share abilities.

Osha saw May in The Acolyte on a different planet, where she was presumed dead. This implies there is a connection between them, although the series does not directly call it a Force dyad.

Show creator Leslye Headland confirmed this in an interview, saying it would make sense if she ever brought up Rey and Kylo Ren as a couple. The series often references the Power of Two, a term associated with the Sith, but also possibly hints at May and Osha’s unique bond.

This is not confirmed in The Acolyte, but their powerful connection and continued exploration of this relationship suggests that they may be a Force dyad. The Brendok witches’ attraction to this special bond, separate from the Sith, further deepens their complexity.

One mind and soul but two bodies

As May and Osha’s relationship develops in The Acolyte, it becomes even more complicated. The final episode of The Acolyte reveals that the twins may actually have a single consciousness that shares two separate bodies. This theory is based on several hints throughout the show including a nursery rhyme they often sang during their childhood: “Always Born as One, Two.”

Yet May and Osha have more similarities than differences. By episode seven, it’s clear that both have an M-count(H). This is logical because, by the end of the narrative, May switches places with Osha. While Kirmir trains with her and takes advantage of her anger and sadness; May is taken in by Jedi who misinform her about her origin story

Their different paths reflect their deep bond. Despite starting off on different paths, shared memories and experiences reveal that they are less different than they think. The conclusion of the story where both girls turn to the dark side after discovering the truth reminds people how close they are.

It tells a fascinating story of May and Osha in The Acolyte, whose mystical background and their unique connection to the audience should never be overlooked. Their story, full of themes of the Force and complex relationships, brings an exciting new dimension to the Star Wars universe.

After the first season ended, fans are eagerly waiting to learn more about May and Osha’s relationship, as well as their place in this galaxy. The Acolyte is now streaming on Disney+ in the U.S.
