Oscars are finally adding a category to honor the work of the stunt, some fans and filmmakers have wanted for years. On 10 April, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that a new award called Achievement in Stunt Design will be introduced, but will not be assigned to the 100th Oscar in 2028. The ceremony will celebrate films released in 2027.
In an official statement, the academy president Janet Yang and CEO Bill Kreer said, “Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an important part of films. We are proud to respect these actors hard work and creativity.”
Stunt crew are responsible for many of the most exciting scenes in the film, from pursuing high -speed cars to complex fight scenes and dangerous jumps. Until now, the Oscar had no category to recognize its efforts, even though other award shows such as screen actors guilds already do.
One of the biggest voices behind a stunt Oscar is John Vik director Chad Stahlsky. He spoke several times about the need for this recognition and even met with members of the academy who supported the idea. Actor Ryan Reynolds also voiced his support, especially promoting Deadpool and Wolverin, praising his film’s stunt team.
Many people believe that the award has been overwhelmed for a long time. Great action films like Mission: Impossible and John Vik gave a lot of their success to stunt actors, which make the jaw leaving scenes possible. Fans and filmmakers are equally happy to see the academy that it is finally credited where it is.
However, the catch here is that the Academy will announce full rules for the category in 2027. This includes a description of who can actually win, whether it is stunt coordinator, artist or both. It is also not clear whether films will be judged as a whole or if only a standout stunt sequence will be presented.
Even if we have to wait for a few more years, the stunt community will finally find our moment to shine at the Oscars.
