Tamil film Thangalan has taken a good opening at the Indian box office, earning around Rs 17 crore on its opening day. This is the fifth highest first day collection for a Vikram starrer, after two Ponniyin Selvam films, I and Cobra. The first two films claimed to be based on a hugely popular book, while the third film was directed by star director Shankar. As a standalone film from Vikram, it is in second place after Cobra (Rs 19.50 crore).

In Tamil Nadu, the film earned Rs 12.50 crore on its first day. For a 2024 film, it finished second behind Indian 2, which earned Rs 13 crore last month. The film was actually ahead of Cobra (Rs 11.50 crore) in Tamil Nadu, but was lower in the rest of India. The big difference came from the Telugu states, which were almost half of Cobra with Rs 2.25 crore. Had there been competition from two Telugu films, a single release could have had collections close to or higher than Cobra.

These numbers have come due to the big holiday of Independence Day, so they can be termed as good. If these numbers had come on a non-holiday day, they would have been considered excellent. Today, after the big holiday, there will be a big drop in the collection. What level it reaches today and then how it improves over the weekend will decide the fate of the film.

The regional breakup of Thangalan’s opening day at the Indian box office is as follows:

Area Total
Tamil Nadu Rs. 12.25 crores.
Karnataka Rs. 1.25 crore.
AP/TS Rs. 2.25 crores.
Kerala Rs. 1.25 crore.
hindi belt ,
Total Rs. 17.00 Crore.
