Thandel is inspired by the true story of a fisherman from Srikakulam. He, along with other fishermen, accidentally flows into the Pakistani water and is imprisoned in Karachi for more than a year. During their imprisonment, they tolerate severe torture and lack basic requirements such as food and proper fabrics.

Naga Chaitanya has played the lead role of the main leadership, and his character in the film has highlighted his flexibility to the harsh realities faced by Indian fishermen and unimaginable challenges. After a year of cruel treatment, all fishermen are eventually abandoned.
