Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan are uniting for a massive entertainer. Thalaivar 173 remains one of the most awaited films. However, the project suffered a setback when director Sundar C left the film due to ‘unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances’. But the good news is that Sibi Chakraborty has now come forward to direct this ambitious project.
Thalaivar 173 will be directed by Sibi Chakraborty
Sometime ago, on January 3, 2026, filmmaker Siby Chakraborty took to X (formerly Twitter) and announced his decision to be a part of Thalaivar 173 as a director. The overwhelmed filmmaker penned a long note, in which he thanked Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan for giving him this dream opportunity.
Sibi started his post by sharing that as a small-town boy, his only big dream was to meet his favorite ‘super star’ (Rajinikanth) and take a picture with him, and how his passion for the megastar propelled him towards cinema.

Chakraborty further said in her emotional note, “Today is that day. #Thalaivar173Day. And I remember Thalaivar saying, “Dreams do come true. Miracles do happen.” Sometimes, life goes beyond dreams and becomes even bigger with the great Ulaganayakan, Padma Shri @ikamalhasan sir and #Mahendran sir as our creators.
He concluded by saying, “Forever grateful to @rajinikanth sir, @ikamalhaasan sir and #Mahendran sir, and I promise to put my heart and soul into keeping the faith.”
