Food plays an important role in the Sindhi festival Thadri. This year Thadri is on August 25, 2024. On this day, people of the Sindhi community do not use gas stoves and do not cook food in the kitchen. All the food eaten on Thadri is prepared a day in advance and eaten cold without heating. This food is believed to help keep the body cool from within. Followers also worship Goddess Sheetala, who is believed to provide cooling to our body and mind, helping to prevent or cure heat-related diseases like chickenpox or wounds.
After cooking the day before the festival, the gas stove is covered and water is sprinkled on the burners. Sprinkling water on the stove symbolizes the pacification of elements like heat and anger. The next morning, on the day of Thadri, this gas stove is worshipped with flowers, vermilion, rice grains, etc.
