Tech Tips: How to know if your new iPhone is real or fake?
With the growing number of fake iPhones, it is important to know how to verify the authenticity of your device. Here are some ways you can check if your iPhone is real or fake.
Listen to the story
iPhone is one of the best-selling products worldwide. Apple’s flagship smartphones are not only packed with great features and specifications, but for some, they are also status symbols. According to Statista.com, Apple managed to generate revenue of about US$39 billion from its iPhone sales in the third quarter of 2024. However, the high demand for iPhones has also led to a rise in fake models that are almost identical to the originals. If you buy an iPhone from trusted sources like the Apple Store, there is no need to worry. But if you buy it from unauthorized third-party sellers or give it for repair in unverified markets, there have been many cases where people have reported receiving fake iPhones or getting their original device replaced with a fake iPhone during repair.
Festive sales are going to start soon in online and offline markets, so this problem may increase even more. So, whether you are buying a new device, buying a refurbished device or want to check your existing device, here are some ways to check whether it is a real iPhone or a fake one.
Check the Packaging and Accessories
The first thing to do to verify the authenticity of your iPhone is to check the packaging and accessories. Apple is known for its meticulous attention to details, even in its packaging. Genuine iPhone boxes are sturdy, with high-quality images and accurate text. Accessories inside the box, such as cables, should match Apple’s standard. If you see poor-quality printing, loose packaging, or mismatched accessories, this could be a red flag.
Verify Serial Number and IMEI
Like every smartphone, iPhones have a unique serial number and International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. To find the serial number, go to Settings > General > About. Then, go to Apple’s Check Coverage page and enter the serial number. If your device is genuine, the website will display details about your iPhone model, warranty status, and other related information. To check the IMEI, dial *#06# on your iPhone. Then compare the displayed number with the IMEI listed on the box and SIM tray. All numbers should match.
Check the build quality of the iPhone
Apple iPhones are known for their premium and sturdy build. When you hold a genuine iPhone, it feels solid and well-built, with no loose parts or gaps. The buttons should click firmly, and the Apple logo on the back should be perfectly aligned and feel smooth to the touch. Pay close attention to the overall design and physical features of your iPhone. The screen size, display quality, weight, and thickness should match the official model’s specifications. Remove the SIM tray and inspect the slot. Fake iPhones often have visible flaws in their construction, such as rough edges, misaligned logos, or loose buttons, which you can easily spot if you look closely. You may also consider using a magnifying glass to inspect more closely.
Check the software and features
The most important way to spot a fake iPhone is through its software. Genuine iPhones run on Apple’s proprietary iOS. You can check if your device is running the latest version of iOS by going to Settings > General > Software Update. Unlike fake iPhones often seen on social media that may run on Android that looks like iOS, a real iPhone will always run on iOS. Also, try using Siri by pressing the power button or saying “Hey Siri.” If Siri doesn’t activate, your iPhone may be a fake.
Visit an Apple Service Center
If you notice any suspicious signs or are unsure about the authenticity of your iPhone, the best way to be 100% sure is to visit an authorized Apple service center and have it checked by experts.
