Apple may have another M1 moment – the new Apple Silicon, in this case the C1 modem, beating the silicon, which came to change it, Qualcomm’s 5G modem, at least some of the metrics. Ocla, a company behind the popular speedtest service, published a report, compared to 5G speed between iPhone 16 (Snapdragon X71 Modem) and new iPhone 16E (Apple C1).

In summary, Qualcomm Modem provides high top speed, but C1 improved in cases where the network speed was slow. Ookla’s test covers the top 3 carriers in the US, AT & T, T-Mobile and Verizon, but here is the overall chart.

Speedtest Report: Apple C1 defeats Qualcomm Modem when the network speed is low

Among users that experience motion of poor networks, 10th percent of all tests, 16E out the 16E with 27.35Mbps vs. 16.66Mbps. Even the meaning test has a small benefit. This is only in the 90th percent-when the Qualcomm-based phone comes at the top.

Here is a copy-carrying breakdown, which shows that in cases of poor network connectivity, the iPhone 16E improves the iPhone 16 across the board.

However, when the network’s speed is good, the iPhone 16E changes the tables at 16E:

Apple is allegedly working on a version of C1 with MMWave connectivity, but rapidly did not cause much damage to the 5G taste lack of taste iPhone 16E. MMWave coverage is also smooth in America and in some countries it is no one. Instead, the results of the Ocla have identified a large issue for the C1 modem.

T-Mobile users got the highest downlink speed, whether they have the iPhone 16 or 16E. However, among the T-Mobile customers, people with 16E gained less speed than those with the iPhone 16. Ookla credited T-Mobile’s 5G standalone (SA) nationwide rollout and better deployment of carrier aggregation (CA).

There are no official figures for the X71, but the 4-link CA for Download Qualcomm’s mid-range modem, while C1 tops 3. Interestingly, Qualcomm’s modem also supports Uplink Carrier aggregation, while C1 does not. And yet look at the upload speed results uploaded in all the three carriers – the iPhone 16E beats its pricier sibling.

This is an impressive first outing for Apple. In future C1 versions and C2, the company should focus on improving 5G SA and career aggregation support, promoting its high end performance. MMWAVE support will be good, but there will not be much difference in many areas.

Apple also claims that C1 is the most efficient 5G modem that has been used on iPhone so far. The iPhone 16E officially lasts up to 21 hours of video streaming, while the iPhone 16 lasts up to 16 hours. It is accompanied by a large battery (4,005mAh vs. 3,561mAh). And to be fair for Qualcomm, the X71 is older than the company’s current modem.

This is not the whole story – Ookla says that it is working on a more detailed report that compared the entire iPhone 16 series. The report ends with a teaser – apparently, the iPhone 16 Pro Max defeated 16E in the “Most Performance Matrix”. Pro Max uses the same X71 modem, so the difference comes from elsewhere (antennas, perhaps?).
