Natalie Dormer, who plays Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones, has expressed her disappointment over her character’s death on the show. During an interview with Collider Ladies Night, Dormer expressed her disappointment over Margaery’s death scene.
“I was disappointed that she left like that,” Dormer said. “I wanted more but she was very disappointed in that moment with Jonathan (Pryce), so that’s part of it, that’s how you know you’re doing it right.”
Margaery Tyrell dies in the Season 6 episode The Winds of Winter. In this episode, Cersei Lannister uses wildfire to destroy the Great Sept of Baelor. Margaery and several others trapped inside are killed instantly by the explosion. Margaery, understanding the danger, attempts to warn everyone to flee.
Dormer said that, although Margaery’s death was brutal, the character’s actions provided a sense of justice. Dormer said she was exonerated in the end – it’s a few sentences, but that’s all there is to it. She was exonerated, and at that moment, she felt free to let it go.
Many fans were disappointed by Margaery’s death, believing that her character, who had already been through so much, deserved a better ending. Dormer previously explained how she would have liked Margaery’s farewell.
“If Margaery had to die, how would I want to see her die? Probably by dragon,” Dormer told GamesRadar+. “That would be the most appropriate, right? But that would mean Dany would have to die, so who knows?” Despite Dormer’s imaginative dragon design, Margaery’s fiery death was closer to the dramatic flair she had envisioned.
Margaery Tyrell, played by Natalie Dormer, was the daughter of Lord Mace Tyrell and Lady Alary Tyrell, and the granddaughter of Lady Olenna Tyrell. She became queen consort after marrying King Joffrey Baratheon and later his younger brother, King Tommen Baratheon. Her downfall began with accusations of perjury and false commitment to the Sparrow movement, which led to her tragic death.
During the trial of Cersei and Loras, Margaery stands with her father in the Great Sept of Baelor. When she learns that Cersei and Tommen are missing, she attempts to evacuate the Sept with her brother Loras.
Her escape attempt fails, and the sept is destroyed by wildfire, killing everyone inside. Margaery’s death also contributes to Tommen’s subsequent suicide and Cersei’s ascension to the Iron Throne. Without Margaery to link House Tyrell and House Lannister, her grandmother Olenna Tyrell joins Daenerys Targaryen’s forces at Highgarden.
