In a year-end message, Satya Nadella called for a change in the way artificial intelligence is integrated into daily life and the workplace. Microsoft’s CEO stressed that AI in 2026 will have to empower people rather than replace them. His message is based on the technology concept of “bicycles for the brain”, originally coined by Steve Jobs.
Steve Jobs originally called the computer a bicycle for the mind, because computers had greatly enhanced human intellectual abilities, just as bicycles had made it easier for us to travel. Now Satya Nadella wants AI to be the next cycle for the brain. “A new concept that develops ‘bicycles for the brain’ is the way we’ve always thought of AI as a scaffold for human capacity versus an alternative,” Nadella wrote.
Satya Nadella indicated that it is important to ensure that developments made in AI help bring greater productivity rather than replace humans in the workplace. His comments come at a time when major tech companies, including Microsoft, have laid off thousands of employees to prepare for a more AI-ready future.

Satya Nadella observed that the industry has moved beyond the early stages of AI discovery, entering a phase where widespread dissemination is beginning to separate spectacle from substance. Highlighting the unpredictability of this technological marathon, he said, “We are beginning to distinguish between ‘spectacle’ and ‘substance.’ We now have a clear understanding of where technology is headed, but there are also harder and more important questions about how to shape its impact on the world.”
He called for the development of a new balance in how society understands the role of AI and cognitive tools, stressing the need to advance the debate on technological sophistication. According to the Microsoft chief, now is the time to focus on equipping people with the tools they need to collaborate and achieve with AI.
The tech industry needs to evaluate the real-world impact of AI
The Microsoft CEO stressed the need for responsible deployment and diffusion of AI, saying, “We need to be thoughtful about how to spread this technology across the world as a solution to the challenges facing people and the planet.” He added, “For AI to gain social acceptance it must have real-world impact.” According to Nadella, this also includes how scarce energy, computing and talent resources are deployed when it comes to AI development.
Running artificial intelligence models isn’t cheap, requiring billions of dollars worth of GPUs. Earlier this month, Microsoft announced a new investment of $23 billion for data centers in India.

Nadella emphasized that the most meaningful metrics for AI progress are outcomes that positively benefit people. He compared the emerging landscape of AI development to the often messy process of any major technological advancement, acknowledging that the path ahead will be complex.
He concluded his talk by reiterating the basic purpose of computing. Satya Nadella stressed that AI should follow the path of computers to empower people. He said, “Computing throughout its history has been about empowering people and organizations to achieve more, and AI must follow the same path. If we do, it could lead to one of the most profound waves of computing ever. I hope we will collectively push for this in ’26 and beyond.”
