plot
Sarvam Maya, a fantasy horror-comedy film, tells the story of Prabhendu, an atheist who comes from a family of Hindu priests. After abandoning his traditions, he decides to make a living as a musician, but finds it difficult to earn money.
In contrast, his father and brothers are popular priests who are also sent abroad to conduct ceremonies. When Prabhendu returns to his village in Palakkad, he meets his cousin Rupesh, a local priest. Since he assists his cousin in religious rituals, he does not trust them and only joins them for the money.
However, Prabhendu’s life takes an interesting turn when he comes in contact with a ghost that only he can see. The spirit has no memory of its origins and calls itself Delulu, an entirely Gen-Z spirit unaware of its past. As Prabhendu’s life becomes filled with confusion and chaos because of her, they develop a lovely relationship, which leads him to learn more about Delulu and his true origins.
Good
Sarvam Maya is a thoroughly entertaining film that rediscovers the entertainment factor within a Nivin Pauly film. The actor looks pleasant and comfortable in his field of comedy drama, playing the adorable boy-next-door character with ease.
Apart from the joy of seeing Nivin Pauly shine with his comic timing, it is also wonderful to see him share a lively and fun chemistry with actress Rhea Shibu.
Sarvam Maya is not a traditional horror comedy that blends horror and horror with comic elements. Instead, the film is a feel-good entertainer that offers plenty of laughs through its characters and narrative.
Directed by Akhil Sathyan, the film feels like the kind of modern film that his father, Sathyan Anthikad, might have made in the 1990s or early 2000s. The peace and quiet that the film offers, along with the light-hearted moments, keeps it engaging and interesting.
Akhil’s writing is definitely Gen-Z-coded, making it relatable without coming across as annoying or disturbing. On the technical front, Justin Prabhakaran delivers some excellent tracks, with Manu Manjeet delivering calm and meaningful songs.
Additionally, Sharan Velayudhan’s cinematography is commendable, presenting the picturesque frames of Palakkad and its serene beauty. The conclusion turns out to be a satisfying experience, giving memorable moments to the audience.
bad
While Sarvam Maya is an entertaining venture, the pace of the film falters a bit. There is a slight dip in pace in the second half, making it feel sluggish at certain points, though it still manages to satisfy those looking for a feel-good watch.
Furthermore, some characters seem unnecessary to the narrative, leaving one to wonder why they were included.
Display
Nivin Pauly shines the most with his charming performance in Sarvam Maya. The Premam actor delivers a film that offers a serene experience, which feels refreshing after many years.
Aju Varghese plays an important supporting role, reminding the audience of the comical moments he shared with Nivin Pauly in films like Thattathin Marayathu and Oru Vadakkan Selfie. Riya Shibu also acts well, making Delulu an endearing and memorable character.
