Saripodha Saanivaram has had a good opening weekend at the box office. The Nani starrer grossed Rs 58 crore worldwide in its first four days, of which around Rs 40 crore came from India while Rs 18 crore (US$2.15 million) came from overseas.
The film performed best among urban audiences, which means it had a very good weekend in Nizam, Karnataka and USA. It earned around Rs 15 crore over the weekend in Nizam, taking its collection to over Rs 7 crore. The film saw a good jump on Saturday, and reached the first day’s levels. There was a drop on Sunday, which is common for a film’s massive collection in Hyderabad.
The bonus for the film is the opening in Karnataka where it grossed over Rs 5 crores, while the distributors suffered losses over the weekend. Similarly, the overseas collections were also huge, where it grossed a massive US$1.70 million over the weekend in the United States. Tamil Nadu also had good collections on Saturday and Sunday and earned close to Rs 4 crores over the weekend. The Hindi dubbed version of the film was a nonstarter.
However, the film struggled in Andhra Pradesh except Vizag, where distributors incurred losses. The losses in Andhra Pradesh will be less than the profits elsewhere, which will help the film move ahead. This year has been disappointing for the Telugu film industry, but even the films that are doing well are doing poorly in Andhra, including Kalki 2898 AD. Hanuman is the only film to gross in the state, but that too was possible only thanks to Sankranti, which does huge business at the box office in the state.
There was some problem with ticket prices in the last two years, but this year after the change of regime, the problem has been resolved, but still it is not earning as well as before. All eyes are on the release of Devra at the end of the month, which is a film that is doing well in the state.
