It’s been four years since the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip was launched and Samsung is now into the sixth generation with the Z Flip 6. The recently launched flip foldable is now in our office and we’re sharing some additional impressions ahead of its detailed review.
While it looks similar to last year’s Z Flip5, Samsung has introduced some long-awaited upgrades to it. These include a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED display with 1-120Hz variable refresh rate, a 50MP main camera, and the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for the Galaxy S10 and 12GB of RAM by default.
On the visual side, the Flip6 is slightly thinner at 14.9mm and our review unit sports the new blue colour which is really muted in person. The frame is now matte instead of the glossy finish on the Flip5 and you also have colour-matching metal rings around the camera.
One of these cameras is now a 50MP sensor, replacing the 12MP shooter from older Flips. The other camera is the same old 12MP ultrawide with a 123° field of view.
The retail package is as slim as ever — you only get a USB-C cable and a SIM ejector tool.
The new 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED screen on the Flip6 is noticeably brighter than its predecessor. Samsung claims a maximum brightness of 2,600 nits, which we’ll be sure to test in our full review. It also does a better job of hiding that annoying crease in the middle.
The 3.4-inch AMOLED cover screen is still shaped like a folder and comes with more widgets this time and includes a lot of AI features like suggested replies for text and auto zoom in flex mode.
The Galaxy Flip 6 is Samsung’s first flip phone to feature a vapor chamber to help cool the flagship Qualcomm chipset. You also get a large 4,000mAh battery that helps it last longer.
I wish the charging speed was higher than 25W. Oh and Samsung DeX is still nowhere to be found on the Flip6 which is a bummer. That’s all we have for now, as our review team puts the Flip6 through its paces.
