The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is thinner, lighter, stronger, and smarter than its 2023 predecessor and gets a notable upgrade to its camera system.
The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for the Galaxy S20, no matter what market you’re in. The chipset’s processing power is harnessed for a variety of AI tasks and (for the first time on the Z Flip) heat is kept in check by a vapor chamber.
Additionally, the phone now comes with 12GB of RAM (up from 8GB last year) and either 256GB or 512GB of storage.
The main camera has been upgraded to a 50MP sensor (f/1.8 85° lens with OIS), which offers 2x in-sensor zoom. You can get even closer with AI Zoom, which goes up to 10x magnification. The 12MP ultra-wide camera (123°) remains unchanged, the same goes for the 10MP selfie cam (1.22µm, 85°).
The main display is now an LTPO panel (1-120Hz), but has the same 6.7” diagonal and FHD+ resolution. The Flex Display has the same size and resolution as before, 3.4” 720 x 748px, and it still runs at 60Hz. It can reach up to 1,600 nits in high brightness mode.
Auto Zoom is an AI-powered feature for Flex Mode (i.e. when the phone is used by folding it in half so that it acts like a tripod on its own). This feature automatically zooms in and out to get the best framing for the shot without your direct control, making it possible to take hands-free group photos. Nightography has been enhanced to support video HDR. Advanced image processing features are available from inside the Instagram app.
Other AI features also use the Flex Display, such as Suggested Replies which analyses your recent messages and suggests responses to incoming messages, so you don’t have to open or close the phone to type. It can also show notifications from Samsung Health. New widgets have been added for even more customisation and you can have multiple widgets running at the same time.
Samsung has also further optimised the hinge to achieve a slimmer profile when the phone is closed. The Galaxy Z Flip6 measures 85.1 x 71.9 x 14.9mm when closed and 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9mm when opened and weighs 187 grams. The Z Flip5 was 15.1mm when closed (but the same 6.9mm when opened). Other dimensions, including the weight, are unchanged.
The Z Flip6 and Z Fold6 are the first foldables with particle ingress protection – IP48. This doesn’t stop dust from getting in, but keeps larger particles out. Water protection is the same as before and can survive up to 1.5 metres (5 feet) underwater for up to 30 minutes. The phones use enhanced versions of Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus 2, making it the most durable Z Flip ever. Following in the footsteps of the S24 series, the devices feature recycled cobalt and rare earth elements, as well as recycled plastics, aluminum, and glass. The packaging is made from 100% recycled paper.
Just like the S24, the Galaxy Z Flip6 (and Z Fold6) will get 7 years of OS updates and security patches. This will go a long way in reducing e-waste. The phone launches with Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1, so Android 15 and One UI 7 will be the first major upgrade.
The battery capacity has been increased to 4,000mAh, which is better than the 3,700mAh of the Z Flip 5. Charging is still the same with 25W wired (50% in about 30 minutes) and 15W wireless.
Connectivity includes 5G and some versions of the phone come with an eSIM along with a physical SIM. Apart from this, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 are also present in it.
