Samsung’s next foldable phone, Galaxy Z Flip 7, may come up with a surprise under the hood. According to recent leaks, the phone may have its exinos 2500 chipset facility instead of the required Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. This will be a major change for the Galaxy Z series, as it always depends on the Snapdragon chips in the past. If this is true, it will first mark when Samsung has used its in-house processor in one of its foldable phones. This step can help the company to reduce costs and gain more control over its hardware.
A report from Chosun daily It is claimed that Samsung has decided to proceed with Exinos 2500 for Galaxy Z Flip 7. This chip is developed by Samsung’s system LSI division and is based on its own 3-nanomator gate-all-round (GAA) process. Production is expected to begin in May, more than 200,000 units of Galaxy Z Flip 7 before the end of June. The phone can be officially declared in July at Samsung’s next Galaxy Unpacked event.
The first rumors were that Samsung Acinos would stick to Qualcomm due to low production yield and concerns of 2500. In fact, Wccftech It was reported that a test version of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 with Snapdragon 8 Elite Chip had already passed an internal test. However, the new report states that Samsung now believes that the production of the exinos chip is stable sufficient for a commercial release.
Source cited by Chosun daily Say that the decision can also be based on pricing. Qualcomm may have allegedly moved to exinos to save the Samsung costs, with an increase of more than 20 percent of its chip prices each year. Since the Galaxy Z series foldables are manufactured in small numbers compared to the Galaxy S series, the risk involved is also low.
Interestingly, Galaxy Flip 7 can use exinos, more premium Galaxy Z fold 7 is still expected to run on a flagship Snapdragon chip – perhaps Snapdragon 8 Elite – showing that Samsung is taking a mixed approach. It can also give Samsung some benefits while interacting with Qualcomm on future deals.
Using Exynos 2500 in Galaxy Z Flip 7 can help Samsung gain valuable experience with its 3nm GAA process, which is still relatively new. Experts believe that this experience can help improve yields for future chips, including the upcoming 2Nm processors.
Professor Kim Yong-Sek at the University of Gachon said that by focusing on 3Nm chip production, Samsung can formulate the basis for better results in the next generation mobile processor.
