Sam Altman says slack at tech companies creates fake jobs, there has to be a better way
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has criticized work-communication platform Slack. Altman confessed that he was afraid to use Slack, stressing that the platform often creates fake jobs at tech companies. He acknowledged that Slack could be replaced by AI in the future.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has admitted that he is not a fan of Slack. Slack is a popular communication platform used in workplaces. OpenAI is no stranger to Slack and reportedly does most of its communication through the platform. However, according to Altman, Slack can create fake jobs within tech companies.
In an episode of Conversations with Tyler, Sam Altman was asked about the preference of Slack over email in OpenAI. The OpenAI chief said the reason for using Slack was because it was better than email. However, it appears that he did not like using this platform. “I don’t know whether Slack is good or not,” Altman said. “I suspect the threshold for making something better than email isn’t high, and I think Slack is better than email.”
While OpenAI used Slack because it facilitated instant communication, Sam Altman really hated it when the app bombarded him with information. “I dread the first hour in the morning, the last hour before I go to bed, where I’m dealing with this explosion of Slack, and I think it creates a lot of fake work,” he explained.
Sam Altman wants AI to replace Slack and Microsoft Office
Altman is a pioneer in the world of artificial intelligence and believes AI can do the job in a much better way than Slack. However Sam Altman indicated that it would not be limited to just communications platforms, but would also potentially replace Microsoft Word and Google Slides.
“There’s something new to be built that is going to replace many parts of the current office, productivity suite that will be an AI-powered version of all these things,” Sam Altman said.
OpenAI bosses envisioned a workplace tool that could automatically manage most tasks without requiring human input. He said, “You are trusting your AI agent and my AI agent to work on most things and dispatch us when needed.”
Elon Musk takes a dig at Sam Altman over his desire to change Microsoft Office
Sam Altman’s comments on AI-powered replacements for Slack and Microsoft Office caught the attention of tech billionaire Elon Musk. Musk and Altman have had a contentious past, with Musk leaving OpenAI years ago.
Elon Musk responded to a clip of the interview on X. “As I was saying, OpenAI will compete directly with Microsoft,” he wrote.

Microsoft was an early investor in OpenAI, investing $1 billion in 2019. The $1 billion stake is now worth about $135 billion. Both companies have recently made changes in their relationship.
