Unnao Rape Case: CBI challenges Kuldeep Sengar’s bail in Supreme Court

In this news bulletin, India Today Legal Editor Nalini Sharma reports on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)’s move to challenge the Delhi High Court’s decision granting bail to Unnao rape convict Kuldeep Sengar. The investigating agency has filed a petition in the Supreme Court, terming the High Court order as ‘perverted’ and ‘legally wrong’. The CBI argues that Sengar, an expelled BJP leader, is a ‘highly influential person’ and his release poses a serious threat to the life of the victim. The report states that Sengar was recently granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 15 lakh, but the CBI says that ‘going to jail after conviction is the rule, bail is the exception.’ Nalini Sharma explains that the agency is opposing the High Court’s interpretation of the law with respect to public servants under the POCSO Act.
