In the latest development in the Saif Ali Khan stabbing incident, Mumbai Police detained a suspect in the case from Thane this morning. Mumbai Police revealed that the arrested accused is a waiter in a restaurant and has confessed to committing the crime. His first statement has come out in the latest report while the suspect arrested from Durg has been released.
A police officer, among about 100 police personnel searching for the accused, shared with The Indian Express that the accused has reportedly confessed to the crime, saying, “Ya maine hi kiya (Yes, I did it).”
Mumbai Police later on Sunday morning claimed that preliminary evidence suggested that the attacker, Vijay Das, is a Bangladeshi national. Police revealed that the attacker used multiple identities, including Bijoy Das, Vijay Das, Mohammad Ilyas and BJ. However, they identified him as Mohammed Shariful Islam Shahzad, 30, who changed his name to Vijay Das after entering India to hide his origin.
The report further said that Islam allegedly changed his location several times, avoided being captured by CCTV cameras and hid in Dadar and Worli areas. He was eventually captured from Ghodbunder area of Thane, when he was hiding in dense mangroves, about 70 hours after the attack.
According to the report, police said Mohammed got scared after knowing that someone was close to him but he was eventually caught. He is being interrogated by the police at Khar police station and will be produced before the Bandra Metropolitan Court on Sunday afternoon.
Apart from this, another alleged accused arrested in the Saif Ali Khan case, Akash Kanoji from Durg, was being taken from the RPF police station of Durg for release. While talking to ANI while sitting in a police jeep, he said that he is not an accused and has not committed any crime.
He said that he was brought for investigation. He said, “I did nothing wrong. I was brought here for questioning and now I have been released. I am not an accused.”
The police officer also said that they emphasized that Kanojia was a suspect and not the main accused, and that they were investigating.
