S Jaishankar meets German Chancellor, conveys PM’s personal greetings

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin and conveyed personal greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mr Jaishankar is in Berlin on the second leg of his three-nation visit. He arrived in Germany from Saudi Arabia after attending the first India-Gulf Cooperation Council ministerial meeting for strategic dialogue.

“Honoured to meet Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin today. Conveyed PM Modi’s personal greetings to him. Looking forward to his visit to India for the 7th Inter-Governmental Consultations,” he said in a post on Twitter.

The minister also held in-depth discussions with Jens Ploetner, Security and Foreign Policy Advisor to the Federal Chancellor. “Our talks focused on preparations for the IGC and important strategic developments,” Mr Jaishankar said.

He met Friedrich Merz, chairman of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party and a member of the CDU-CSU (Christian Social Union) parliamentary group.

He said, “Great pleasure to meet CDU President @FriedrichMerz and members of the CDU-CSU parliamentary group. Had a wide-ranging discussion on our bilateral relations as well as regional and global issues. Appreciated their many insights and suggestions to strengthen our strategic partnership.”

On Tuesday, Mr Jaishankar met Michael Roth, Chairman of the German Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, and discussed current global challenges and possibilities for new bilateral cooperation.

“Glad to meet Mr Michael Roth, Member of Parliament and Chairman of the @Bundestag Committee on Foreign Affairs. Shared views on current global challenges and possibilities of new cooperation between India and Germany,” Mr Jaishankar said in a post on X.

He also held a lively interaction with foreign affairs and security policy experts organised by the Munich Security Conference in Berlin on Tuesday.

“Views were exchanged on the changing global order, multipolarity, security challenges and strategic convergence between India and Germany,” he said.

Mr Jaishankar also interacted with members of the German Parliament Bundestag. He said, “Appreciated their insights on contemporary global issues. Valued their support for strengthening India-Germany relations.”

Earlier, Mr Jaishankar held wide-ranging talks with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock and took stock of the India-Germany strategic partnership covering areas such as trade, defence and security.

In the third and final leg of his visit, Mr Jaishankar will go to Geneva.
