Richard Gadd on his struggles: “No matter how bad things get, there are always better things”
The multi-talented Richard Gadd recently won the 2024 Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for his limited Netflix series baby reindeerRichard got a little emotional while accepting the award and thanked all the wonderful cast and crew and said, “This is the stuff of dreams. Ten years ago, I was depressed and hopeless. I never thought I would be able to take charge of my life. I never thought I would be able to heal from what happened to me and get back on my feet. And then here I am, over a decade later, picking up one of the biggest writing awards in television.”

Recalling his own tough times, the actor added, “Now I don’t mean to sound arrogant, I mean I want to encourage people who are going through tough times right now to persevere. I don’t know much about this life, I don’t know why we’re here, none of that. But I do know that nothing lasts forever. And no matter how bad things get, things always get better. So if you’re struggling, keep going, keep going, and I promise you, everything will be okay.”
Richard Gadd’s semi-autobiographical limited Netflix series received 11 Emmy nominations and four wins including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. In the seven-episode series, Richard Gadd plays Donnie Dunn, a struggling comedian working at a pub in Camden. His meeting with Jessica Gunning aka Martha inspires him to perform a simple act of kindness. The conversation between the two unravels a tale of darkness and buried trauma.
