Reports of Noam Chomsky’s death are false, his wife clarifies
Renowned linguist Noam Chomsky is trending on X after fake news of his death spread. His wife says the reports are false.

Noam Chomsky’s wife, Valeria Wasserman Chomsky, said on Tuesday that reports of the death of the renowned linguist and activist were false.
“No, that is a lie,” he wrote in response to an emailed question from The Associated Press on Tuesday. Valeria Chomsky told the AP last week that Noam Chomsky, 95, had been hospitalized in Brazil while recovering from a stroke he suffered a year ago. But Sao Paulo’s Beneficencia Portuguesa hospital said in a statement that Chomsky was discharged on Tuesday to continue his treatment at home.
On Tuesday morning, Chomsky was trending on X as false reports of his death were rampant. Jacobin and the New Statesman published condolence messages for Chomsky, though the former changed its headline from “We Remember Noam Chomsky” to “Let’s Celebrate Noam Chomsky.” The New Statesman removed its essay written by former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis entirely. Brazilian news site Diário do Centro do Mundo also removed its story announcing Chomsky’s death and issued a correction.
The Chomsky family has been living in Brazil since 2015. Noam Chomsky, known to millions for his criticism of US foreign policy, taught for decades at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2017, he joined the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
