YouTube has quietly replaced how it models the material and a new report states that the video platform is now giving more freedom to the creators, especially on political and social subjects. According to the internal training material accessed by The New York Times, YouTube is no longer a hurry to remove the video that partially breaks its rules, as long as the material is considered in the public interest.
This new approach was reportedly began in December 2024. Earlier, if 25 percent of the videos also had materials that violated the policies of YouTube, such as abusive language or misinformation, it would be reportedly taken down. But now, the boundary has increased. Video can still remain when half of their content breaks the rules, provided that they cover political discussion, social issues, or current events that the platform believes that people should listen.
The latest update comes at a time when other social media companies, such as Meta and X, have also strictly reduced their efforts for moderate speech. These companies have faced political pressure, mainly accusing them of censorship. However, YouTube has not publicly talked about this change and has been internally chosen to update its moderation guidelines.
YouTube says its goal is to balance the loss and protect the freedom of expression. For example, a video that incorrectly claims that the Covid Vaccine Change DNA was not removed. The forum allowed it to remain as it also had a news clip, political opinion, and did not directly discourage vaccination. Similarly, another video that used a transfobic slurk was also left online as it was part of a long discussion about the government’s hearing.
Critics believe that this policy change can cause more abusive language and false information spreading online. They argue that the platforms are not for free speech but to save money on moderation and keep the controversial content online to run the engagement.
Nevertheless, YouTube updates its policies on the basis of allegedly developing public discussions and social concerns. The platform says that it will continue to remove the materials that cause severe damage, but are also in place for interactions that may be blocked first.
Since elections and social debate dominate online platforms, the decision to reduce YouTube’s content restrictions can play an important role for viewing and listening to the audience. However, whether it leads to more open interaction or will the rise of uncontrolled misinformation only tell a few times.
